Sony Vizha is looking to reshape Tamil entertainment with diverse programming, global formats and stronger brand partnerships. Raja S, Chief Content Officer, South Regional, SPNI, outlines the channel’s strategy.
Tamil television has long been dominated by family dramas, reality shows and singing competitions that have built loyal audiences over the years. However, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) believes changing viewer preferences are creating opportunities for a fresh entrant in the market.
This opportunity forms the foundation of Sony Vizha, SPNI’s new Tamil general entertainment channel, scheduled to launch on October 19 at 8 pm. The channel plans to offer a diverse mix of original fiction, international reality formats, movies and sports-related programming.
According to Raja S, Chief Content Officer, South Regional, SPNI, the channel aims to address the gap between the entertainment Tamil audiences want and what traditional television currently provides.
To understand the market, SPNI commissioned research in August 2025. Raja says the findings highlighted how economic growth, affordable internet access and exposure to international content have influenced the aspirations and entertainment choices of younger viewers.
He notes that nearly 50% of Tamil Nadu’s population is aged 35 or below. This audience increasingly expects better production quality and a wider selection of genres while retaining the language and cultural relevance that matter to them.
Raja believes Tamil viewers should not have to depend on content in other languages to access the entertainment they enjoy. The channel wants to bring a broader range of stories to Tamil television without losing its regional identity.
The company also sees an opportunity to develop programming that appeals to multiple generations. While traditional television has largely focused on family dramas, streaming platforms have expanded the availability of crime, action and thriller content. Sony Vizha hopes to combine these varied interests through programming that families can enjoy together.
However, entering a competitive market will not be easy. Established players such as Star Vijay, Sun TV and Zee Tamil already have strong audiences, popular shows and established relationships with advertisers.
Moving Beyond Traditional Family Dramas
Sony Vizha aims to expand the storytelling possibilities of Tamil television by exploring subjects beyond domestic family conflicts.
Raja believes the industry's heavy dependence on mother-in-law and daughter-in-law narratives has limited opportunities to explore different settings, characters and experiences.
The channel plans to introduce stories set in schools, colleges and hospitals while exploring genres such as comedy, crime, thrillers and horror. It also intends to feature contemporary relationships, including romance and heartbreak outside marriage, taking inspiration from the appeal of Korean dramas among younger audiences.
Its announced programming includes Notebook 90’s – Kadhal Flashback, Crime Patrol – Kuttrangal Tharum Echarikkai and Madam Police – Naanga Irukka Bayamen.
The entertainment offering will also include films such as Sardar 2, Mandaadi and Meesaya Murukku 2. In addition, the channel plans to bring a sports dimension to its lineup through R. Ashwin’s Tamil commentary for all five T20I matches in the upcoming India-New Zealand bilateral series.
By combining fiction, reality entertainment, films and sports, Sony Vizha hopes to establish a broader identity rather than rely on a single programming category.
SPNI intends to build on its experience in Hindi entertainment, including crime shows, human-interest stories, mythology and reality formats, while adapting its approach to Tamil viewers.
The channel’s visual identity is also designed to stand apart from competitors. Its electric blue and yellow logo contrasts with the red and orange colours commonly seen in the market. The name Vizha, meaning celebration or festival in Tamil, reflects its ambition to combine regional culture with evolving entertainment preferences.
Bringing Global Entertainment Formats to Tamil Audiences
Sony Vizha’s launch lineup includes Celebrity MasterChef Tamil, featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Tamil Idol, led by A.R. Rahman. Both draw on established international entertainment formats.
Raja says the channel's differentiation will come from more than adapting familiar concepts. Its strategy involves combining international production standards with well-known talent and strong local relevance.
For example, Celebrity MasterChef Tamil will celebrate Tamil Nadu’s culinary traditions through regional ingredients, traditional recipes and dishes passed down through generations.
The channel also wants its reality programming to feel genuine, allowing contestants to learn and develop naturally rather than presenting overly manufactured journeys.
Looking ahead, SPNI aims to introduce Tamil audiences to popular international formats such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Shark Tank, Got Talent, Idol and Wheel of Fortune. The objective is to preserve the appeal and scale of these formats while adapting them to local tastes.
Investing in Content and Building Audience Awareness
SPNI plans to invest significantly in Sony Vizha as it enters the Tamil entertainment market. According to Raja, expenses will include acquiring films, adapting international formats, engaging prominent talent, developing fiction and investing in sports programming.
During its first year, the channel will focus on attracting viewers and establishing a distinct brand identity.
Its performance will be evaluated through measures such as brand awareness, recall, viewing intent and audience engagement, alongside reach and consumption on Sony LIV.
The initial priority is to establish a strong foundation for long-term growth rather than focus exclusively on immediate commercial returns.
Creating an Integrated Entertainment Ecosystem
Sony Vizha’s strategy extends beyond traditional linear television. SPNI plans to distribute and promote its content across television, Sony LIV, YouTube and connected TV platforms.
Instagram will support show promotion, while YouTube will offer additional material, including behind-the-scenes footage and vertical videos. Sony LIV will provide another avenue for audiences to discover and watch the channel’s programming.
This interconnected approach aims to help viewers encounter content on social media and subsequently watch it on television or streaming platforms. It also creates additional opportunities for advertisers to connect with audiences across different formats and touchpoints.
By combining linear broadcasting with digital distribution, Sony Vizha hopes to reach viewers wherever they prefer to consume entertainment.
Building an Advertising Model Around Brand Partnerships
Beyond audience growth, Sony Vizha wants to develop a commercial model centred on sponsorships and brand integrations rather than relying predominantly on conventional advertising spots.
Raja says around 11 brands had associated themselves with the proposition before launch. The approach draws inspiration from Sony Entertainment Television, where sponsorships reportedly contribute 80–90% of revenue.
The channel aims to integrate brands into relevant programming in ways that complement the viewing experience. For instance, a nostalgia-focused show such as Notebook 90’s could provide advertisers with an opportunity to connect with audiences through shared cultural memories.
According to Raja, the process begins with understanding the advertiser’s business objectives. If a scooter brand such as Hero is expanding in Tamil Nadu and competing with established players such as TVS, SPNI would examine the product’s distinctive features and identify suitable integration opportunities within its programming.
This approach requires close coordination between advertising sales, brand solutions teams, agencies and advertisers.
Raja cites Kaun Banega Crorepati as an example of how brand partnerships can become part of the entertainment experience without disrupting the programme.
He also points to limitations in traditional television measurement, where metrics such as cost per rating point remain important despite challenges in accurately measuring audiences. SPNI believes its partnership-led model can help advertisers explore additional ways to evaluate and communicate brand value.
The Road Ahead for Sony Vizha
Sony Vizha is entering a competitive market with a strategy built around varied programming, international formats adapted for local audiences, multi-platform distribution and integrated brand partnerships.
Its success will depend on whether it can attract viewers beyond established television habits while offering advertisers meaningful opportunities to connect with them.
For SPNI, the objective is not simply to launch another Tamil entertainment channel, but to build a sustainable presence in a changing media landscape.
As Raja puts it, the company may begin on a smaller scale, but its ambitions for Sony Vizha are long term.
